Arlindo Coreiea is a local entrepreneur in Uphams Corner who, with his wife Laura, owns and manages several businesses, including Cape Verdean Liquors, Laura's Place, and J & J Trust. He immigrated to Boston from Cape Verde in 1982, and graduated from Roger Williams University in 1991 with a degree in electrical engineering.

Isaura Mendez is a community leader who has lived in Uphams Corner for over 35 years. She helped to create the Groom-Humphreys Neighborhood Association, the Annual Parents' and Children's Walk for Peace, and Bobby Mendez Peace Legacy in honor of her son who was a victim of street violence. She received the 2002 Massachusetts Black Legislative "Profile of Coourage" Award.

Geoffrey Modest has served the Uphams Corner community for 22 years as a family physician and medical director of the Upham's Corner Medical Center. He is on the faculty at Boston University School of Medicine. A longtime advocate for issues of concern to the Cape Verdean community, he has taught himself to speak spanish and Cape Verdean Creole.

Joseph Wheelwright is a well known Boston based sculptor who carves stones, boulders and trees into living beings. With three partners, he has converted a dilapidated industrial site in dorchester into a studio compound for 40 artists and artisans. Now called Humphreys Street Studios, the refurbished property has helped spark the remarkable neighborhood revival within the Cape Verdean immigrant community in Uphams Corner.
