A life in the arts, particularly the visual arts, is one
of great exhilaration punctuated by loneliness and
struggle. We believe that a secure, long-term studio
in a place to work in company with other artists is
ideal for the creative soul. Helping artists achieve this
goal is a central part of aWIN’s mission. Artists bring
zest, hope, imagination and fun to the city, and in
conjunction with cultural institutions attract riches to
the city’s economy.

aWIN is a
nonprofit outgrowth of Humphreys Street Studios, a
group created in 2001 by three artists and a lawyer who
pooled their resources to convert a squalid complex of
near-abandoned buildings, a listed toxic site, into a lively
community of 45 artists and artisans. The City of Boston
loaned the Humphreys Street Studios group a portion of
the funds required to accomplish the redevelopment.
The model we are creating in New England can be
applied nationally — wherever artists need space.
